University Project: When the Wind Blows, a cold war animation movie and the analysis of the film 40 years later.
The goal of this project was to find a way to make an academic book interesting for the non-scientific reader. Furthermore, a significant amount of work was invested in order to automatize imports from Word into InDesign with the use of scripts.
“The content dictates the layout.” I used this statement as my starting point and was curious where I would end. Even though from a graphic design point of view it might seem like a somewhat unspectacular bachelor project, the challenge lay in making something inherently uninteresting attractive to readers. This process of a transformation is something I strive for in my projects and my motivation behind many of my designs.
One of the specialties of the design of the book was crafting the cover by hand which enabled me to create a lay-flat spine . Due to this binding I was able to create a unique layout which played with the usual notion of two separated facing pages, partly blurring the boundaries of single pages. For a printed version these pages would have to be adapted.
The book is split in three parts: an introduction and the historical surroundings, the analysis of two scenes and lastly the comprehensive study and comparison of the two specific scenes. Besides broadening my creative skills it was really interesting to dig deep into cinematography.
